DEVLOG #1 · GENERAL

The idea is here. Now what?

Every game begins with an idea.

For us, it started with a simple thought: how amazing would it be to build our own game in Unity and eventually release it on Steam?

It sounds simple, but once you truly take that step, you quickly discover that developing a game involves much more than programming and creating assets.

Suddenly, all kinds of new questions appear:

  • How do you get players interested in your game?
  • Do we need a website?
  • Should we set up a Discord server?
  • How do we collect player feedback?
  • When do you start marketing?
  • And how do you build a community around a game that is not even finished yet?

Those are exactly the questions we are working through right now.

One of the first things we learned is that a successful game is not only about its development. It is also about building a group of people who become interested in what you are making. Many indie developers therefore use a combination of a website, social media, Steam pages, demos and Discord communities to involve players in the development process.

That is why we started by building the foundation:

  • A website where we can share our progress
  • A Discord server where players and developers can meet
  • This devlog, where we share our experiences, successes and mistakes
  • A place where feedback is welcome and ideas can be discussed
But perhaps most importantly:We mainly want to have fun.

Dutch GameDevCentre is not a commercial studio. It is a community of people who enjoy making games, learning new techniques and sharing knowledge. Of course, we hope to publish a great game on Steam eventually, but the journey is at least as interesting as the destination.

We will undoubtedly make mistakes.

We will build systems that later need to be completely rewritten. We will discover that some ideas sound fantastic on paper but work less well in practice. That learning process is exactly what makes game development so enjoyable.

Over the coming period, we will take you along through everything involved:

01Development in Unity
02Multiplayer and online functionality
03Website development
04Community building
05Steam publishing
06Playtesting and feedback
07Art, audio and game design
08Successes and failures

Ultimately, game development is not only about the final product.

It is about creating, experimenting, learning and—most of all—having fun together.

Welcome to Dutch GameDevCentre. The adventure has begun. 🎮🇳🇱
